Ground Investigation 'GI' works got underway this week at our Earba Pumped Storage Hydro 'PSH' project.
A number of boreholes and trial pits are being undertaken, along with peat probing and geophysics.
The locations of these exploratory holes are shown on the map.
Although it is very early on in the process, before even the planning application has been made, these exploratory works enable us to better understand the ground conditions across the site. With a better knowledge of the soil and rock profiles, a 3D model of the underground conditions can be built. This means the main structures such as the dams and powerhouse can be positioned accurately, reducing the likelihood of changes once the planning process has commenced. Furthermore, the ground investigation data will mean that the construction methodology can be better described as there will be a better understanding of the different types of material that will be excavated
